A piece of history - Chan residence
The Chan homeThe Chan home in Roxburgh Street Wellington recently enjoyed an extensive repaint. Built in 1904 the original building was owned by James Bennick, who also designed a number of other notable Wellington buildings, including Kings Theatre (1910), Queens Theatre (1916), Paramount Theatre (1917), The Wedge, Glenbervie Terrace (1906) and Bennie House, Salamanca Road (1907). Bennick was also an inaugural member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

Designed in 'Italianate' form with New Zealand influences in the cast iron and leadlight windows, this property is now historically listed as worthy of preservation and is on the tourist walk program 'Historic Mount Victoria Houses'. It is currently owned by the Chans who run a central city restaurant often host to politicians and writers.

Resene Spanish White was used for the main exterior walls complimented by Resene Double Spanish White trim and Resene Quarter Spanish White window sashes and doors. The wrought iron was finished in Resene Elephant to add a striking blue/grey accent to the traditional tonal beige/cream colour scheme.

The concrete and cast iron exterior was finished in Resene X-200 waterproofing membrane and Resene Hi-Glo acrylic gloss respectively. Resene X-200 provides waterproofing protection to the cementitious substrate, while the high gloss Resene Hi-Glo provides maximum protection from the prevailing environmental conditions. The Mt Victoria location, just a stone's throw from the sea, exposes the home to harsh environmental conditions such as wind blown salt. All trim and joinery is finished in Resene Super Gloss high gloss enamel to complete the durable exterior paint system.
