Who ya gonna call? - Graffitti Busters
Graffiti faces a wipe-out in New Plymouth District! A team has been launched that will respond to any reports about graffiti on public or private properties, and remove the painted tags within 24 working hours - for free.

The project is the brainchild of the New Plymouth District Council and includes the Waitara Initiatives Supporting Employment (WISE), with sponsorship from Resene.

"Graffiti can be a big expense for the owners of buildings and fences that are tagged, and the tagged sites can make the neighbourhood look pretty awful. And it's well-known that prompt removal is the best deterrent to would-be graffiti artists and taggers. So the council decided to organise an action team, called Graffiti Busters, that would take charge of cleaning up graffiti as soon as possible," says manager community development Andy Gowland-Douglas.

As well as removing unsightly tags from public view, the Graffiti Busters programme would provide valuable work experience and training to the WISE participants.

"The Graffiti Busters project is a great example of business, community groups and local government working together for the benefit of the wider community," she says.

Any member of the public who spots graffiti can ring the council on 06-759-6060, after which the Graffiti Busters will swing into action with paint can and brush.
