Race beater - The Helm bar

Nestled in a busy location next to Pak N Save and Blockbuster, The Helm bar in Hamilton opened its doors just in time for the big race. With Hamilton coming alive for the Hamilton 400, it was imperative that work was completed on time before the crowds started hitting town.

Thanks to huge volumes of traffic traveling through the adjacent intersection each day, The Helm is in the midst of the action and a natural meeting place for people on the go. Open for just a few days, the race weekend saw an estimated 75% of its full house patrons drawn from the out of town crowds who had seen the bar enroute.

Designed to keep looking its best long into the future, the new Ulster Street building’s exterior concrete walls are finished in Resene Solventborne Aquapel followed by two coats of Resene Uracryl 403 clear for an anti-graffiti finish.

Inside the bar is finished in Environmental Choice approved Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel in hues of Resene Quarter Sisal (pale hemp), Resene Double Sisal (green ochre), Resene Rialto (deep red), Resene Rendezvous (garnet red), Resene Zeppelin (dark violet) and Resene Gin Fizz (warm cream).

The Helm is part of a bevy of bars opened by John Lawrenson, which includes other well known bars Furnace, Bar 101, Easy Tiger and The Corner Post. With that wealth of experience in the driver’s seat, it’s no surprise that The Helm opening week has set new records.
